December 14, 2011

Well now there are only 11 days until Christmas.  I am getting close to being done with my Christmas shopping.  We do not do a whole lot of exchanging of gifts in my family.  We like to just celebrate the TRUE meaning of Christmas which is the birth of Jesus Christ.  It is a sad thing that this world seems to have completely turned it's back on God.  All you ever hear about is how we can't pray here or include God there or even say Merry Christmas without risking "Offending" someone.  What about offending those of us who believe in God?  No one seems to care about the main religion of America anymore.  This country was founded on the belief in God and now this country has turned it's back on Him.  God is not happy about this and I see that in all of the natural disasters we have seen this year, the collapse of our economy and all of the things that are going on today.  The Bible says that all of these things will happen prior to the rapture.  I believe that God is coming back and he is coming back soon.  We had an earthquake in NC this year.  In my 40 years that has never happened.  I am saved and have received Jesus into my heart as my personal saviour.  That being said I am not at all scared that God is coming back.  I actually look forward to that day.  Those that don't believe will believe when that day comes.

I am going to close this post by saying MERRY CHRISTMAS to all...not Happy Holidays but MERRY CHRIST-MAS!!!!!

December 9, 2011

I can hardly believe there are only 16 days left until Christmas.  I am going to my friends annual Christmas Cookie Exchange tomorrow morning.  She and I and our husbands are getting together tonight and the guys are cooking us steaks on the grill while we do our baking.  I am making what I call cow pies which is the no bake chocolate oatmeal cookie.  These are my husbands favorites and the favorite of a lot of people.  I made these for our cake auction at church and they got a bid of $75 for one batch of them.  I am also making cracker candy.  This is another easy one to make.  It is also pretty cheap to make.  The ingredients are Premium Saltines, butter, sugar and Hershey's chocolate chips.  This is another favorite at our church and it brought a $70 bid at the auction.  I will be doing my Christmas baking the week before Christmas and I make these two things as well as a lot of other stuff.  I do this baking and then make gift boxes of goodies for our friends and family.  This year I made my own goodie boxes instead of buying them.  I had a ton of the plastic containers from the Chinese restaraunt so I took those and got some nice Christmas stickers and decorated them myself.  Some of them I accented with glitter glue.  I was very pleased with how they turned out.  It cost me a total of two bucks for the stickers at Walmart.

I love my annual day of baking goodies and Ronnie loves it too cause he gets to sample.  I have been making a from scratch Oatmeal Raisin cookie since I was 12 years old.  I have made them every year.  It started out as something I would make for my Daddy every year and he passed when I was 18 so I kept on making them for my brothers and Grandpa.  I have lost one of my brothers and my Grandpa in the last ten years but I still make these cookies every year to give out with the goodies in honor of my Daddy, Jeff and Grandpa.  They loved these cookies so much.

I also make a Chocolate dipped Bugles and that is one that my Mama insists on me making every year.  That is her favorite.  They are very easy.  You just melt Hershey's Chocolate Chips in a double boiler and dip the Bugles in the chocolate.  It is the perfect combo of salt and sweet.

I also make Haystacks with the Chinese Noodles and Planters Cocktail Peanuts and Hershey's chocolate chips and Butterscotch chips.  I prefer to use the Hershey's brand because they melt better for me.  I have tried the store brand at Walmart but they don't melt as good.

I make pretzel and peanut almond bark as well.  I just melt the white almond bark in a double boiler and then pour it over Rold Gold Pretzel Sticks and Planters Cocktail Peanuts and then mix it all together and spoon or pour it out on Reynold's Aluminum Foil to cool.

This year I am trying out a new candy that I saw on Pintrest and I want to make it because it is cute.  You melt white chocolate chips or almond bark and pour small little circles of it on Reynolds foil and then you put a yellow M&M on it and two Rold Gold Pretzel sticks and let it cool.  This looks like bacon and eggs when you are done and it is adorable.

I guess that is all for now.  I have to get busy so I can get out of here and run some errands and then go to Dana's house to start our baking.  If you would like any of these recipes please feel free to comment and give me an email address I can send it to.

Merry Christmas!!!!!

December 8, 2011

Inspired by the movie Julie and Julia I have created my own personal blog.  I am not going to cook recipes from Julia Childs for the next year but there may be some Paula Deen recipe attempts.  I have many interests and cooking is my favorite thing to do.  My Grandma taught me how to cook cause my Mama hates to cook.  Grandma is my first idol and then there is Paula Deen.  We had to place Grandma into an Alzheimer's unit in February of this year and she is almost to the point of not knowing who I am.  I miss my Grandma so much that it hurts but I take comfort in knowing that she gave me so many things in life that no one can ever take away.  The biggest thing she gave me is the ability to cook as good as she did.  I love cooking her recipes but I also like to invent dishes of my own sometimes.  I am currently working on putting together a cook book full of her recipes and mine too.  Grandpa asked me to work on this project and I am honored to do it.

My second love is Gardening.  My Mama had a large part in teaching me how to plant flowers and plants but again my Grandparents taught me all I know about our vegetable garden.  Last year (2010) they handed down the tiller to me that Grandpa has used as long as I can remember for their gardens.  They taught us everything they knew about gardening and made weekly trips to see us so they could check on the garden.  They were so proud of how well the first garden did.  We planted our second garden this year and it did not do as well but we had some severe heat this year so no one had great success with their gardens.  In September I planted my first fall garden full of collards and turnip greens.  We finally have some turnip greens ready to pick but we are still waiting on the collards to be ready.  We have tons of collards.

These are the two things I love to do the most so if you follow my blog you will probably hear a lot about both things.  A lot of people pay for therapy but cooking and working in the yard and garden is my therapy and I like the price much better.
